Never Stop Believing In Yourself And Always Keep Your Eye On the Prize!

A job search is a simple matter of probability...sooner or later, someone WILL say "Yes" to you!

But first...you have to weed your way through a lot of "No's". To accomplish this you must never stop believing in yourself, stay the course, stay in the fight, and never take your eye off the prize!

As Frank Lloyd Wright once said:

"The thing always happens that you really believe in; and the belief in a thing makes it happen".

The smallest things can make or break your job search

Case in point (no pun intended) - the exclamation point (!).  Yes...this very excited piece of punctuation can do you more harm then good.

In today's Lancaster newspaper, Max Messmer provides some words of wisdom about this overused mark in his weekly article Resumania.

Says Max, "I've noticed recently that an increasing number of job candidates are over using exclamation points."

Exclamation points are generally considered inappropriate for business documents such as cover letters and resumes.  Max goes on to further advise that while "employers seek highly motivated people you shouldnt rely on exclamation points to highlight your passion for your profession."  He adds, "Many employers will view this as amatuerish."

I agree.  This is why, if you have had the profound pleasure  of having me proofread your documents, I have advised you to omit this overused critter from your documents.

So...express your enthusiasm and interest in the job through your WORDS, not with excitable punctuation.  If you are geniunly interested and passionate about what you are doing, you dont need this guy (!) as a crutch.

WHEN YOU NEED EXPERIENCE TO GET EXPERIENCE

An artilce on CareerBuilder today examines ways to overcome a common job search  obstacle for recent grads and those changing careers:  how to get experience when you need experience to get the job in the first place.  Its a common catch - 22 - but it can be overcome.

Read the article for some great advice:  http://www.theworkbuzz.com/career-advice/when-you-need-experience-to-get-experience/

In addition to the adivce offered in this article, I will make another point that you have probably already heard from me:  Remember your transferable work skills!

Much too often when looking for a first job in a new field, recent grads make the mistake of automatically saying "I have no experience".  If you have worked ANY job, the previous statement is simply not true.  Just because the job(s) you held are  not in related fields does not mean it doesnt count!  Consider the following:
  • Have you been a waitress or a retail clerk?  If so...you have customer service experience
  • Have you worked on a production line?  If so...you have probably learned to work in a fast paced environment
  • Have you worked in assembly or inspection?  If yes, you likely possess great attention to detail
  • Have you been a cashier?  If so...you are trustworthy
  • Have you ever trained new hires?  If you have...you have leadership skills
See where this is going???

NEVER down play your previous experiences or assume that your experiences are irrelevant!

Remember...it's your job to show the prospective employer that you have what it takes to do the job.  It's up to you to play up your experiences and express them to the employer in a way that demonstrates you are a qualified candidate!

Social Media Can Doom Your Job Search

An excellent article today on MSN highlights how today's recruiters are using social media such as FaceBook to weed out potential employees.  If you are job searching and use social media in any form - I highly recommend you read this article...even if you already think you know it all.

NO ONE WILL GET A JOB FOR YOU

I recently read the article "No One Will Get a Job for You," which I found on careerigniter.msn.com.   Though I recommend that you take a moment to read the article, the gist of it is this:  You need to be the one to "take the bull by the horns" and wrestle it to the ground.  Those who are finding success in their job searches are sometimes individuals who approach things differently.  Maybe that means breaking outside your comfort zone--being willing to commute to a job, being more aggressive in interviews and on cover letters, being more confident--and thinking outside the box.  One of the great lines from the article is this one:  "Many employers want someone who is proactive and not passive. People who are proactive in their job searches generate more activity than people who wait for interviews to come their way. If you were a hiring manager, wouldn't you want to hire someone who is willing to present solutions, not someone who waits for you to solve his or her problems?"  What can you do differently to position yourself better for a job?  What can you do to finally earn the job you deserve?
