We all know that in any job market, networking is a crucial tool in the overall job search plan. Networking is especially important in a job market where applicants are in abundance - an obstacle anyone searching for a job right now is facing.
Students and graduates will often tell me "I've run out of places to call" or "I cant think of any more companies where I can drop off my resume".
PROBLEM SOLVED!!!
Today I came across an incredible new online tool that is FREE and anyone can use to search employers by zip code, business type, and other characteristics.
Go to http://www.servicelocator.org/. From there, click on "Job Search". In the next window, under the "Plan" heading, click on "Find Potential Employers". In the second paragraph, click on the "Employer locator" hyperlink.
From here you can search by occupation, location, industry, or keyword.
If you are simply looking for companies for cold calls or hand delivery of resumes, I suggest the "industry" option.
Just to give you an idea of how incredibly powerful this online database is...I did a by industry using the "Health Care and Social Assistance" option. Selected the state of PA, and then selected the "Ambulatory Health Care Services" sub-sector. Next I chose Lancaster as the city and was able to gain access to a database compiling of 157 health care practicioners, 225 physicians offices, 97 dentists, AND MORE!!!
With a tool like this at your disposal, you simply could'nt run out of places to send an introductory cover letter, to make a cold call to, or to stop in and drop off a hand delivered resume (looking all spiffy neat-o, of course)!
This market takes PERSISTANCE and a willingness to put in the extra elbow grease and think outside the box.
I STRONGLY encourage all of you to check this site out ASAP.
Hey, what else could you possible have to do on a rainy day??
